The search continues …

Jim Mora Jr., interviewed; Ron Meeks will talk with the Redskins today and Gregg Williams remains the guy most anticipate will land the job.

Mora’s candidacy raised some eyebrows, given that the Redskins already have a coach with similar credentials — defensive minded; ex-head coach — in Williams.

Mora served as Seattle’s secondary coach this past season after leading Atlanta to a 27-23 record the previous three years.

Washington also is expected to interview Meeks, who served as the Redskins’ secondary coach in 2000. He would fulfill the Rooney Requirement that requires teams interview minority candidates. Meeks is Indianapolis’ defensive coordinator.

If Meeks is the final interview, the job could be filled soon. With the Senior Bowl next week, it would be wise for the Redskins to have their head coach in place.

Williams is still viewed as the No. 1 choice for the job by many around the league. However, the fact that he’s now talked to the Redskins on four different occasions, starting with an informal one-hour session last week, has some speculating on what that means.

One executive with a team involved in a coach search said it was curious for a team to talk to an in-house candidate that many times. Another league source agreed.

But one league source called it a “good sign” for Williams. He said they could be discussing who will be on the staff among other things. Owner Dan Snyder and vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato are conducting the interviews. Former coach Joe Gibbs has been at Redskins Park this week; the assistant coaches are on vacation.

“Once it gets done, it’ll go to Gregg Williams,” the source said.

And former Tennessee general manager Floyd Reese, who used to be Williams’ boss, said it was no big deal.

“It’s a very in-depth interview,” Reese said. “They’re trying hard to make the right decision. I have to guess that’s part of the process.”

One candidate, Indianapolis offensive assistant Jim Caldwell, could be Tony Dungy’s successor if Dungy resigns, as is rumored. There are no plans for the Redskins to interview Caldwell.
