To bash Barack, RNC turns to eBay

Campaigns have long used eBay to hawk their candidates’ merchandise. But now, the Republican National Committee is going a step further, using the site to score political points.

Earlier this week, the RNC sold an “Original Barack Obama/Raul Castro Tea Set” for a cool $42.52. In reality, it was just an ordinary tea set, but in the description, the RNC pointed out that “you and your friends could imitate Obama and Castro, sitting down and having tea while discussing world affairs” — a nod to Obama’s willingness to meet with foreign dictators.

“It’s a salient issue, something that people were talking about anyway,” an RNC source said. “It was a unique way to highlight that Obama wants to go down with Castro and talk about who knows what.”

So is this the tip of the iceberg for politicking on eBay? “Stay tuned and stay on eBay,” the source said.
