Taking advantage of moist conditions at Woodmore Country Club, Percy matched the best tournament round of his career. He leads countrymen Michael Sim (66) and Andre Stolz (67) in the third annual Nationwide Tour event in Mitchellville.
After Percy bogeyed the first hole in the rain, the weather improved and he made seven birdies and an eagle, needing just 24 putts in his first tournament round ever at Woodmore.
“I love the course. You can’t just blast it. It really makes you hit proper golf shots,” said Percy. “[I had] a little bit of luck here and there — you could really stop the ball — and some good playing.”
After early-morning rain doused Woodmore, officials allowed players to lift, clean, and place balls hit in the fairway. When the rain stopped, conditions were excellent. In the afternoon, however, when the skies opened back up, conditions deteriorated and play eventually was suspended at 4:28 and then called for the day at 6 p.m.
Percy has three top-10 finishes in his last four tournaments, the best stretch of his journeyman career. After starting on the back nine, Percy sizzled on the front, playing the final seven holes in 6-under-par. His eagle came at No. 6, where he hit a 3-wood to within eight feet and made the putt.
Sim, the Nationwide Tour’s leading money winner, has two wins on the tour this year and would earn automatic promotion to the PGA Tour with another victory.
