The Redskins have had quiet offseasons in the past under Dan Snyder. But it’s rare for it to happen in the first year with a new coach. So, in some ways, this quiet first week represented a departure for Snyder.
Not that general manager Bruce Allen or coach Mike Shanahan had to convince him of this approach.
“No, they didn’t have to sell anybody,” said Snyder, before ducking into Morton’s Restaurant for a dinner with the Redskins Charitable Foundation. “It’s not about the past now. It’s about the future and when you look at the pedigree of Bruce and Mike and everything they’re doing, and their experience, we’re in good hands.”
The Redskins have signed just three players thus far, including journeyman tight end Sean Ryan on Thursday. None are considered a big name. Running back Larry Johnson will meet with Shanahan on Friday. Running back Willie Parker visited earlier this week.
“This is an ongoing process,” Shanahan said. “You won’t come in after the first four days of free agency and say, ‘Hey, we’re done.’ It’s a long process and it won’t happen overnight.”
Meanwhile, the Redskins begin their offseason workout program Monday. Shanahan expects running back Clinton Portis to participate.
“I guarantee Clinton will be there,” he said. “I know Clinton too well. He’ll kick off the offseason on the right note. I want my leaders to be there. I anticipate everyone being there.”
Everyone as in defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and corner Carlos Rogers, who reportedly requested a trade.
“I’m a big fan of Carlos,” Shanahan said.
