Senior PGA Championship: 5 to watch

Five players to watch at this weekend’s Senior PGA Championship:

Fred Couples
As the Champions Tour stages its first major, the Senior PGA, the focus turns to Couples, who won three straight events early in the year and leads the tour in driving distance (299 yards), scoring (65.9), and earnings ($1.05 million).

Tom Watson
At age 60, he remains as competitive as ever on the Champions Tour; his worst finish in four events was a tie for 12th. Watson won a riveting duel with Couples in Hawaii in January, when he shot a 22-under 63-66-65–194 to win by one stroke.

Fred Funk
With the winds up at Colorado Golf Course, the course could be suited to Funk’s precision game. Coming off knee surgery, Funk has struggled to regain his form, finishing out of the top 20 in five of six Champions Tour events.

Bernhard Langer
In four years, Langer has won 10 Champions events, including two this season, but he still is searching for his first major. Langer has been in the top 10 in seven of 11 majors, including a runner-up to Jay Haas at the 2008 Senior PGA.

Michael Allen
The defending champ ended a 20-year victory drought, winning last year at Canterbury with a clutch birdie on the 72nd hole. He splits time on the PGA and Champions Tours. Allen has been in the top 20 in three of four senior events in 2010.
