Poppins pops in

What kid didn’t wish for Mary Poppins to read him a story when he was growing up?

Dame Julie Andrews did just that Monday at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, sharing a passage in her latest children’s book with a handful of kids.

Andrews, an active spokeswoman for children’s literacy programs, read theatrically with daughter and co-author EmmaWalton Hamilton from “The Great American Mousical” before signing copies of her book.

When asked by a youth in the crowd whether she’s famous, Andrews replied, “I’m not as famous as I’d like to be with my books, but yes, I think so.”

Poppins (er, sorry, Andrews) is about to release another kids book, “The Very Fairy Princess,” and is working on her autobiography.

Andrews earlier in the day spoke at the American Library Association’s annual conference.
