First-round draft pick Haloti Ngata was still sidelined during padded workouts Monday with a minor sprain of his anterior cruciate ligament.
While he did participate in some non-padded drills, he said doctors still have not given him a timetable for his return.
“I just did some little squats and stuff like that,” Ngata said. “I did a little motion and some balancing in order to build muscle around [my knee].”
Jonathan Ogden is still missing from camp due to the death of his father. Ogden was not on the field, and head coach Brian Billick said he does not know when Ogden might be back.
“We?re not absolutely sure,” Billick said. “We?ll just adjust as he is ready.”
Defense is king: During two-minute drills, the defense reigned supreme over a struggling offense.
Both the first- and second-string offenses had to settle for field-goal opportunities.
The first team drove into the red zone but could not come up with a touchdown. Instead, a Matt Stover field goal closed the drill. The second string managed 30 total yards, settling for a 52-yard miss from kicker Aaron Elling.
The players seemed to be looking forward to Friday?s first preseason game against the New York Giants.
Regarding preparation for the game this week, Billick said there would be little, if any, considering it is only the preseason.
“You could play a team that is 90 percent zone,” Billick said. “But they could decide to work on their blitz package. So you don?t know. There is only so much you can prepare.”
Billick said the starters would play the typical one-quarter time frame he typically uses in preseason games.
Star of the day: Safety Ed Reed had an interception during the final drill of the day. Backup quarterback Kyle Boller threw a pass up the middle, where Reed was waiting. Reed leapt in the air and brought down the pass.
