Dulaney, Severna Park split state title matches

Dulaney and Severna Park closed out the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association Lacrosse finals Wednesday at UMBC. Theboys and girls teams from both high schools faced each other in the respective 4A-3A title games.

There was no sweep, as Severna Park?s boys won the school?s third championship since 1999, and the Dulaney girls captured its second straight.

Severna Park?s boys finally exorcised the demon that was Dulaney lacrosse. The Falcons, who won, 7-4, were 0-4 against Dulaney in the state final game.

The key to victory for Severna Park was the quick start. The Falcons, with a 35-26 advantage on shots, started the first quarter with four straight goals.

Shane Coughlin and Randy Waugh led the Severna Park offense with two goals. Waugh also added two assists. Eric Lusby added a goal and two assists, Dan Burns scored once and Frank Taglienti had a goal.

Dulaney got a goal from Augie Bauer, Matt Lafferty, Rich Romanelli and Brad Ruzicka.

On the girls side, Dulaney was defending its 2005 championship against Severna Park, which was in its eighth state final game.

Dulaney had three-goal nights from Meghan Frederick and Blair King. The Lions got single scores from Holly Batton, Holly Burman, Mary Heneberry, Kristen Horsman and Dana Poist.

Severna Park?s Julie Gardner led the way with three goals, while Allison Behringer, Katie Cloud, Ruby Devine, Danielle Ensley, Kaitlyn Fuller, and Shayna Stearns all scored once.
