The idea that Shaquille O’Neal is ready to lead an NBA front office makes about as much sense as putting the 7-foot-1, 300-pound plus former center into a Buick sedan. At least O’Neal thought better of one of those when he took himself out of the running to interview for the vacant general manager job with his old team, the Orlando Magic. Watching Shaq try to drive a car in which his knees are halfway up the steering wheel is as awkward as Shaq burying himself in the nuances of the salary cap. At least in running a basketball team, O’Neal could grow into the job by coming aboard as a vice president. But if he’s the difference between Dwight Howard staying in Orlando and leaving, the Magic are in far worse shape than they appear.
Right now, a man who is too big for most everything still needs to grow into his role with TNT, where in his first season he has been a fourth wheel next to a trio of Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley that doesn’t really need one.
