Terps go with Steffy at quarterback

When the University of Maryland opens its season Sept. 1 against Villanova, Jordan Steffy will be the Terrapins starting quarterback, head coach Ralph Friedgen said.

Steffy entered spring practice at the top of the depth chart, with sophomores Josh Portis and Chris Turner never able to overtake him during preseason workouts. Steffy has played well in each of the three scrimmages, including a 19-for-26, 165-yard performance Thursday.

“He?s been ahead since the spring, and I think if anything he?s probably widened the gap,” Friedgen said. “He knows the offense very well and he?s a very instinctive player. He?s also a leader on the team.”

Steffy is the only quarterback at Maryland who has played a game in College Park, as he saw action in six games as a true freshman in 2004 and in one contest last season. However, Friedgen did not rule out playing more than one quarterback.

Friedgen also announced that Obi Egekeze will open the season as the place-kicker and true freshman Travis Baltz will be the punter.
