Williams talks with Southern about coaching job

(AP) — Former Grambling quarterback and coach Doug Williams was interviewed Saturday for the vacant football coaching position at Southern University.

Williams, who is director of pro personnel for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, confirmed the two-hour, off-campus meeting with Tony Clayton, chairman of the Southern University System Board of Supervisors. It happened before the Bucs’ game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Southern Athletic Director Greg LaFleur told The Advocate newspaper that Baton Rouge attorney Cleo Fields, a prominent Southern alumnus, joined Clayton at the meeting.

Williams also played in the NFL for the Buccaneers and Washington Redskins. While with the Redskins, Williams was named the MVP of Super Bowl XXII — a 42-10 win over the Denver Broncos. He was also named one of the 70 Greatest Redsksins.
