Takoma Park resident Maia Schechter has made the cut in the U.S. Women’s Amateur. Schechter, a sophomore at North Carolina shot 73-76 – 149 to hit the cutline and survived a 15-for-14 playoff to advance to Wednesday’s match-play round of 64.
At The Country Club in Cleveland, Ohio, Schechter will play Alina Ching of Honolulu, teeing off at 10:30 a.m. Ching is a sophomore at Pepperdine after winning WCC freshman of the year honors.
The leader board had a youthful, Pacific flavor with 17-year-old medalist Hyo-Joo Kim of Korea (68-68 – 136) seizing the top seed, followed by 15-year-old Lydia Ko of New Zealand (66-71 – 137), 16-year-old Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand (71-68 – 139), and 17-year-old Alison Lee of Valencia, Calif. (68-71 – 139).
Schechter, spent two years at Montgomery Blair before moving to Montverde Academy (Fla.) and playing at the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy.
