They’ve gushed about the first pick, praising his strength and tossing him into the starting competition. He’s already worked with the first unit in some defenses.
That’s more than can be said about the rest of Washington’s rookie class.
Then again, that was probably expected given that five of the six picks were selected in the fifth round or lower. Only the top pick, second-rounder and weakside linebacker Rocky McIntosh, appears ready to contribute immediately, even if it’s just as a backup.
The other rookies have some work to do, starting with tonight’s third preseason game at New England. With the first round of cuts Tuesday — the Redskins must cut 12 players — here’s where the other rookies stand:
» Defensive tackles Anthony Montgomery (fifth round) and Kedric Golston (sixth round)
Golston has been more active than Montgomery. If the Redskins only keep eight defensive linemen, it would be difficult for either to make the roster – unless Ryan Boschetti is cut. If they keep nine, there’s room for one.
» Safety Reed Doughty (sixth round)
The coaches were high on him before camp opened. He’s making a huge jump, from I-AA Northern Colorado to the NFL, and has struggled with the speed of the game. But the Redskins aren’t deep at safety, which means Doughty likely will earn a roster spot.
“If you want to make the team, you have to play like someone who can make the team,” Doughty said. “It doesn’t matter if you went to Florida State or Northern Colorado.”
» Offensive tackle Kili Lefotu (seventh round)
He is a longshot to make the final roster. Lefotu is behind veterans Spencer Folau, Tyson Walter and Jim Molinaro in the competition. He’s a possible practice squader.
» Linebacker Kevin Simon (seventh round)
He hasn’t played since the Baltimore scrimmage because of a groin injury. Simon is small for the middle and was oft-injured in college. He’ll have a difficult time making the roster.
“He’s far behind,” said Redskins linebackers coach Dale Lindsey.
