Westbrook’s stature growing

Brian Westbrook discovered early that size would be a major obstacle for him. In high school, the DeMatha alum remembered not playing much his first two seasons.

“[The coach] just looked at my size,’’ Westbrook said. “It was one of those things I grew from, one of the obstacles I worked through.’’

At 5-foot-8, Westbrook still lacks ideal size. His stature continues to grow. The versatile back is on pace to surpass 1,000 yards rushing for the first time in his career — and it might happen in his hometown. Westbrook needs 93 yards to reach 1,000.

Not bad for someone who also tore his ACL as a high school senior, leaving few college options. He played at Division I-AA Villanova.

Now he’s a big key to the Eagles’playoff hopes and has 1,493 combined yards from scrimmage.

“I always thought I could do a lot of good things if I got the ball,’’ said Westbrook, in his fifth season. “Sometimes people look at stature and can’t see your ability. I always said if you give me an opportunity, I’ll show you what I can do.’’

Said Eagles coach Andy Reid, “He’s a unique talent.’’
