Week 11: What we’ve learned about the Redskins

» The running game just isn’t working with Ryan Torain. It’s not all on him, though. When defenses are more focused on the run, it’s been easy to stop and the line has not provided enough cutback lanes. Sunday, for example, the line rarely re-established the line of scrimmage for him and there were few cutback lanes. Too much penetration is allowed. But on Torain’s last 36 carries, he’s only gained 57 yards — with a long of six yards. The Redskins have tried many different ways to ignite the rushing attack — from more three-receiver sets to counters. It hasn’t worked.

» The supporting cast did not change Sunday, but the offense still moved the ball. Yes, the Redskins still need to upgrade their offensive talent. But they lacked a No. 1 receiver, had no running game and received production from one player (Donte Stallworth) who hadn’t done much since 2008. Why were they better? Because the quarterback was efficient, receiving time in the pocket for most of the game and throwing with confidence. When the quarterback play is sound, the offense can move.

» Graham Gano needs to start making some kicks. The problem is, as coach Mike Shanahan said, there aren’t many good options available. It’s what they said after last season, too. The fact that Shayne Graham, who was cut by Washington after a terrible camp this summer, signed with Miami late last week speaks volumes. But Gano is out of excuses. Yes, he’s young and terrific on kickoffs. But he’s missed 16 kicks the past two years combined (plus three that were blocked). If you take away his three kicks that were blocked, he’s still only making 76 percent of his kicks. There are 28 kickers with a higher percentage (on at least 12 attempts).

» The Redskins have two (more) young defenders with speed in linebacker Perry Riley and safety DeJon Gomes. There’s still no guarantee that either one will develop into quality starters, but both have shown an ability to make tackles and react fast. It’ll be interesting to see how Gomes develops. He could become LaRon Landry’s replacement if Landry leaves via free agency (both players ran a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash at their respective combines). Regardless, the Redskins are building a good young defense with quickness. Other teams have noticed.
