Woods delivers the winning birdie in another Presidents Cup victory for U.S.
It was performance worthy of Tiger Woods in his prime. This time, it was delivered by Tiger Woods 2.0. His six birdies in 15 holes delivered a 4 and 3 victory over Aaron Baddeley and, in storybook fashion, his final birdie clinched the Presidents Cup for the United States, 19-15.
After a weekend of solid ball-striking and woeful putting, Woods found his stroke on the greens thanks to a tip Sunday morning from Steve Stricker.
“He gave me a little putting tip about releasing the blade a little bit,” Woods told Roger Maltbie of the Golf Channel. “Whatever he says about putting I’m gonna listen to him.”
Woods captured the cup on the 15th hole with a greenside bunker shot that came to rest within 18 inches of the hole for a birdie 4 on the par-five. When Baddeley missed a chip from the fringe for eagle, the match was over and the U.S. was a winner again.
America has lost only once in nine Presidents Cups.
Jim Furyk (5-0) won again for Ameica, making virtually every putt he looked at in a 4 and 3 victory over Ernie Els. He is the fourth player in Presidents Cup history to go 5-0. The others were Mark O’Meara (1996), Shigeki Muriyama (1998 in the Internationals only victory), and Tiger Woods (2009).
Furyk made a tournament-high 21 birdies and upped his Presidents Cup victory total to 20, the most in event history.
