From the morning full-pad workout:
Studs
C Will Montgomery » Liked him yesterady; liked him even more today when he worked with the first unit again. He did a good job handling DT Cornelius Griffin as well as calling out adustments vs. the blitz. He also did a nice job vs. Kedrick Gholston.
WR Santana Moss » Seemed to make every other catch in full-team and nine-on-nine drills, often going against Justin Tryon. Moss also went past rookie CB Kevin Barnes.
DE Brian Orakpo » A daily stud it seems. Went by Chris Samuels twice in one-on-one work, first to the outside and then to the inside. On the second time, he stepped outside and then cut back underneath.
S Chris Horton » Came up strong on a run around the right end, getting inside the tackle to make the stop. Reed Doughty is having a terrific camp; Horton is still ahead because he, too, has played well.
TE Fred Davis » OK, he really didn’t do a whole lot. But he had a nice block on a run around the end and watching him run after the catch is fun. He does not run like a tight end. This also gives us an occasion to mention this play involving Chris Wilson. On the play, Wilson was supposed to jam Davis. But he lunged at him, never hit him and Davis ran past. He was wide open, but the play went to the other side.
Duds
WRs Maclolm Kelly and Devin Thomas » Sorry, guys; gotta stop having to sit out all the time with nagging injuries. Maybe they can’t be prevented, but this is not helping their development. Both had minor hamstring issues that sidelined them today.
CB Fred Smoot » He was torched on a long pass to Antwaan Randle El down the right sideline (though he dropped the ball). Santana Moss badly beat him down the left side line also. Trent Shelton also toasted him in a one-on-one drill earlier in the day. Smoot has been decent in camp, but is coming off a tough year.
LT Devin Clark » Buges loves him; wish we saw what he did but we don’t. In the one-on-ones, Alex Buzbee used his power to drive him back.
OT Jeremy Bridges » He’s low-hanging fruit. Bridges was driven back by Jeremy Jarmon and then fell backward. Magic 8 ball says … he’s a guard.
CB Doug Dutch » We include him only because of what secondary coach Jerry Gray said to him. Before one pass, Gray kept shouting to Dutch, ”Don’t let him in! Don’t let him in! Don’t let him in!” So what happens? Dutch allowed the receiver to get inside. So Gray said, ”Dutch, what does, ‘Don’t let him in!’ mean?”
G Chad Rinehart » Again, not buying it. Allowed pressure by Lorenzo Alexander and Kedric Golston, whose slap caused Rinehart to go off-balance.
