Grossman signs with Redskins

Could this move mean more changes at QB?

ASHBURN – The simple answer for why the Redskins signed Rex Grossman on Wednesday is this: They needed a quarterback, he’s familiar with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan’s system after spending last year in Houston and he has started 31 games.

And maybe that’s all his arrival means.

Or it could signal more change at the position, one the Redskins likely will continue trying to upgrade. Coach Mike Shanahan was not about to divulge his plans.

“We want competition,” he said. “We’re going to try and improve. We are going to work everyday to get better. You look at Rex’s background. He has a year into the system.”

Meanwhile, the Redskins are expected to host outside linebacker Joey Porter on Thursday. It could be a sign that they’re uncomfortable with Andre Carter’s move from end to linebacker in a 3-4 scheme.

As for Grossman, he started during Chicago’s Super Bowl run in the 2006 season. His supporters point to injuries and the lack of offensive talent around him in Chicago.

In reality, Grossman is around to help the other quarterbacks learn this offense, a version of the West Coast. For now that means Jason Campbell, Colt Brennan and Richard Bartel. Also, the Redskins could draft a quarterback next month, possibly as high as No. 4 overall. Grossman could serve as a tutor and perhaps emergency starter if Campbell is then jettisoned, which some teammates think could happen.

All of Grossman’s career starts came with Chicago. But he has started more than eight games only once — in 2006, when he threw 23 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. His career passer rating is 69.5.

If the Redskins are thinking about moving Campbell, one general manager warned they might want to think twice.

“I’m looking at the same list they are,” he said. “There are no options with hope.”
