Sprucing Up

Home improvement for Sen. Kennedy’s clubhouse?

Is Sen. Ted Kennedy’s “hideaway” in the Capitol getting spruced up for the fall?

It certainly appears that way. Hideaways, as they’re known, are additional offices in the Capitol building itself that higher-ranking members of Congress are assigned beyond their main offices in the members’ office buildings. They make for a convenient place to chill out between votes or to conduct private business. Having been in the Senate since 1962, Kennedy’s is one of the most enviable — a large room on the third floor, just off the Senate Radio and TV Gallery.

And it mightbe getting better. A Yeas & Nays source told us Wednesday that workers had removed all the furniture and carpeting from Kennedy’s office. The hallway adjacent to the Radio and TV Gallery was covered with cardboard, so as to minimize the damage from workers hauling things out. Our source said the only thing left in the office was a street sign that appeared to be from Ireland. Kennedy’s staff did not respond to a request for comment.
