Another title for Shingler

Shingler captures Northern Virginia Am for the fourth time

Has a Washington-area amateur ever collected as much hardware in one season as Haymarket’s Scott Shingler?

On Sunday, Shingler won his second title in eight days when he captured the Northern Virginia Amateur at Raspberry Falls. The previous Sunday, when he won the Metropolitan Amateur, he became the first player in history to simultaneously hold the Amateur and Mid-Am titles in both D.C. and Virginia.

Next month he tries to become the first to win all four in a calendar year when he defends his Virginia Mid-Am title.

In Sunday’s rain-shortened event, cut to nine holes in the final round, Shingler (67-71-38 – 176) beat Jake An (70-71-37 – 179) by three strokes. A week ago in the Metro Amateur, the 39-year-old Shingler toppled the 22-year-old An in the 36-hole match-play final, 2 and 1.

It was the fourth Northern Virginia Am for Shingler, a member at Evergreen. He also captured the Henry Kerfoot, Jr. Trophy in 1995, 1997, and 2008. The former Potomac High and George Mason University standout is the second player to capture four Northern Virginia Ams since the tournament was established in 1974. Gil Fitzhugh won six in a span of 13 years (1980-92).
