Flyers load up on defense on Day 2 of draft

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Flyers began a defensive-minded offseason by loading up on defensemen in the NHL draft.

Four of the six players the Flyers selected on Day 2 of the draft were defensemen. They also chose a goaltender and a forward. In Round 1, the Flyers selected center Scott Laughton with the 20th overall pick. They took goaltender Anthony Stolarz from Corpus Christi of the North American Hockey League with the 45th overall pick.

Then general manager Paul Holmgren turned his attention to defense, where the organization is thin in the minors.

The Flyers took Shayne Gostisbehre out of Union College in the third round and Fredric Larsson from the Swedish Junior League in the fourth.
