Cartoonists enjoy evening in the sun

It’s not easy to get your hands on an original cartoon by legendary Washington Post cartoonist Herblock, because most of them are held at the Library of Congress. But attendees of the 20th annual Cartoons & Cocktails event at the National Press Club on Wednesday night got just that chance when one of Herblock’s works fetched more than $1,000 in a live auction.

The Examiner, which sponsored the event, also saw its cartoonist, Nate Beeler, fetch some serious dough for his cartoons, including one of Mayor Adrian Fenty and Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee that went for $525.

And who’s the next cartoonist to watch? When Young D.C.’s Casey Drogin’s “Letters to the Pope” went up for bid, one audience member yelled, “This kid is going to be famous.”

The evening benefited the Ellen Masin Persina Scholarship, Young D.C. and the Cartoonists Rights Network International.
