Dustin Johnson is quickly going the way of past third-round U.S. Open leaders who have bombed out in the final round. It all started when he needed five strokes to get down from greenside fescue and made a triple bogey at No. 2. Pushed drives at No. 3 and No. 4 have Johnson at 6-over for the day through four holes.
This is reminiscent of final-round blow-ups from leaders Aaron Baddeley (80 in 2007), Retief Goosen (81 in 2005), Gil Morgan (81 in 1992), and Marty Fleckman (80 in 1967).
Meanwhile, Ernie Els is 3-under for the day, tied for the lead with Graeme McDowell, at 3-under for the tournament while Phil Mickelson (1-under) and Tiger Woods (1-over) have exchanged positions from where they started the day.
