The Towson University volleyball team had its six-match winning streak snapped, playing tough but coming up short in its bid to upset third-ranked UCLA Tuesday at the Towson Center, losing 32-30, 30-23, 30-25. Sophomore outside hitter Maddie Haseltine led the Tigers (7-3) with a match-high 14 kills and added six digs. Senior Christina Grempler recorded 10 kills and led all players with a match-high seven blocks.
UMBC: Freshman Ashley Oscars was named America East Conference rookie of the week. The award is the second consecutive for the Retrievers. Fellow freshman Kira Giles won the honor the first week of the season. Oscars emerged as an outside hitter last week, averaging 3.73 kills per game in five matches last week, including a match against the defending national champion Washington Huskies.
LOYOLA: The Greyhounds dropped two matches at the Chesapeake Challenge at Reitz Arena last weekend. The eight-team tournament, which was co-hosted by Loyola and Navy, was played entirely on Saturday. The Greyhounds fell to North Carolina A&T and La Salle, dropping their record to 2-10 through Tuesday.
NAVY: Sophomore outside hitter Jessie Sims was selected as this week?s Baden Patriot League player of the week. She was named to the Chesapeake Challenge (Loyola) all-tournament team after averaging four kills and 4.75 digs per game. The Mids are now 3-6 after splitting four matches over the two-day tournament.
MARYLAND: After leading the Terps to a second-place finish at the Holiday Inn Express Tournament at Stony Brook, Jade Brown was named co-Atlantic Coast Conference player of the week. The junior outside hitter recorded a team-high 20 kills twice against No. 17 Ohio and host Stony Brook. She averaged 4.58 kills per game and tallied a .328 hitting percentage in the tournament.
COPPIN STATE: The Eagles dropped to 0-4 following a 30-28, 30-23, 31-29 loss Tuesday at Howard. In her first start at setter, Lauren Lacey recorded a career-high 30 assists for the Eagles. Brittany Arvin had three kills, giving her 450 for her career and tying her for third all-time at the school.
GOUCHER: For the first time since 1993, Goucher has started the season 6-0. The Gophers beat Valley Forge Christian and Washington Bible Tuesday.
