The Washington Commanders have hired San Francisco 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters as their new general manager, multiple outlets have reported.
Peters, who has worked in NFL front offices since 2003, has gained prominence by helping the 49ers establish one of the strongest and most talented teams in the league.
The Commanders, who finished the 2023 season with four wins and 13 losses, are hoping Peters can bring some of that success over with him to the East Coast.

Here is all you need to know about D.C.’s newest executive:
NFL background:
Peters was first hired by the New England Patriots as a talent scout in 2003 and remained with them until 2008, after which he moved to the Denver Broncos. He was promoted to assistant director of college scouting in Denver in 2014 and then director two years later. Both teams won Super Bowls while he was with them.
He joined San Francisco in 2017 as the vice president of player personnel. He was promoted to assistant general manager in 2021. During his tenure in San Francisco, the team appeared in three NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl.
What Peters’s new job entails:
Peters’s first job will be to find a new head coach for the 2024 season after owner Josh Harris fired head coach Ron Rivera fresh off the team’s 4-13 finish. A decision on incumbent general manager Martin Mayhew will also have to be made.
Peters will help create the team’s roster for next season. Washington secured the second overall draft pick in the 2024 draft, behind the Chicago Bears. The team has five picks within the top 100.
Other changes to Washington:
Peters’s hire comes as the Commanders reshape their leadership team into a “new era” in Washington. More changes in the front office are expected.
The future for Mayhew is not as clear. With the addition of Peters in his role, the team could move Mayhew to a different position or fire him.
