Tough break for Nats prospect Jack McGeary. The 21-year-old, who famously brokered a deal with the team in 2007 to attend class at Stanford and pitch in the minor leagues part time, will undergo Tommy John surgery on his left elbow. McGeary is still a raw prospect. He spent two years at Stanford, working out on his own during the school year and squeezing in some innings during the summer. He finally turned pro for good last year, but the results were hit-or-miss – a 2-12 record with a 5.54 ERA. This season he improved at low-A Hagerstown with a 4-1 record and a 4.62 ERA in eight starts. Then the elbow pain hit and McGeary is headed for a pitcher’s worst nightmare. He will miss 12-to-18 months recovering.
