Trump to host NYC women’s golf tournament backed by Saudi Arabia

Fresh off the LIV Golf uproar last month, former President Donald Trump may be on the cusp of teeing up another round of golf controversy.

Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point, which is managed by Trump’s business empire, is expected to host a women’s golf tournament connected to the Saudi-backed Aramco Team Series in October, the New York Times reported.

The Aramco Team Series made its road show debut last year. Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund is serving as its “presenting partner,” and the tournament bears the same name as its title sponsor, Aramco, which is a state-owned oil company, according to the report.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams’s administration green-lit the course hosting the event, the news outlet reported, noting that the Big Apple could not “unreasonably withhold approval” due to its contract with the Trump Organization.

Last month, Trump faced backlash from families of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack for hosting a LIV Golf event at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster, located in New Jersey. Families ripped the former president and LIV participants for accepting “blood money” by partaking in the event.

Although the kingdom has vehemently denied any culpability in the terrorist attacks that killed roughly 3,000 people, the families have pointed to documents released by the FBI, such as a report last year examining connections between the kingdom and 9/11.

The FBI has released multiple documents, including a report last year examining connections between the kingdom and the terrorist attacks on 9/11, prompting 9/11 families to label LIV’s funding as “bloody money” and rail against its participants. Fifteen of the 19 hijackers on 9/11 were Saudi.

Additionally, U.S. intelligence tied Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the 2018 killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi despite the kingdom’s leadership denying responsibility. The slaying of Khashoggi stoked international backlash against Saudi Arabia.

While Aramco Team Series and LIV Golf have ties to the Saudi government, they are officially separate entities.

Trump previously shrugged off human rights concerns over LIV’s ties to Saudi Arabia.

“Well, nobody’s gotten to the bottom of 9/11, unfortunately, and they should have, as to the maniacs that did that horrible thing to our city, to our country, to our world,” the former president told reporters last month. “So nobody’s really been there.”

Last year, former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio moved to scrap a city contract with Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point in protest of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. However, last April, a judge determined that the city had improperly nixed the contract, according to the New York Times.

In October, Trump National Doral in Miami is slated to host a second LIV event.
