Terps are put to the test

Walking from Cole Field House to the Gossett Team House Wednesday afternoon, former Maryland running back Josh Allen said, “I have the rest of my life to rest up.”

After four years of hard work on the field, the future of Allen and 11 other former Maryland football players came down to split-seconds in a handful of agility drills in Cole Field House Wednesday afternoon.

Roughly 25 NFL scouts were in attendance for the Terps? Pro Football Timing Day, pulling out the notepads and stopwatches to find out where the dozen players will stack up for the NFL draft April 28-29. Of the12, three Terps ? punter Adam Podlesh, offensive tackle Stephon Heyer and defensive back Josh Wilson ? had worked out at the NFL Combine last month.

On his way off Cole?s turf surface, Wilson said now it?s time to hurry up and wait.

“You hear everything,” Wilson said of the prospects of his draft position. “Nothing really matters what you hear until April 28.”

Wilson reportedly ran a sub-4.4-second 40-yard dash at the combine, but he didn?t run one Wednesday. Wilson is ranked ninth at the cornerback position by Scout.com, the highest ranking of any Atlantic Coast Conference corner. Wilson (ranked No. 89) and Podlesh (No. 94) are the only Terps ranked in the overall top 100 on the Scout.com rankings.

On the other end of the spectrum is quarterback Sam Hollenbach. The quarterback draft class is fairly deep this year, and it?s not a given that Hollenbach will be taken in the seven rounds of the draft. He didn?t rule out playing in another league, such as the Canadian Football League or an indoor league. Scout.com has Hollenbach ranked 12th at his position.

“I would love to be playing this fall somewhere,” Hollenbach said. “We?ll see what happens with the NFL ? that?s obviously the goal. If that doesn?t work out, we?ll go from there.”

Defensive lineman Conrad Bolston, fullback T.D. Callahan, kicker Dan Ennis, linebacker David Holloway, running back J.P. Humber, safety Marcus Wimbush and wide receiver Danny Melendez (a 2005 senior) were also on hand for the workout.
