Freshman quarterback Tyrod Taylor was named starter in place of Sean Glennon for No. 18 Virginia Tech’s home game this weekend, Hokies head coach Frank Beamer said in his weekly teleconference Monday.
Taylor, a 6-foot-1, 220-pound highly regarded prospect from Hampton High, will get his first start Saturday when Virginia Tech (1-1) hosts Ohio (2-0).
“This is not a reflection on Sean,” said Beamer. “He’s put so much into his preparation, and he’s such a competitor. We just feel like with this football team and our offense, Tyrod fits our personnel better right now.”
Taylor replaced Glennon midway through the second quarter Saturday’s 48-7 loss at No. 2 LSU. Glennon, a 6-4, 225-pound junior from Westfield High who started the last 15 games, was 2-of-10 for 16 yards with one interception against the Wildcats. He passed for 2,191 yards with 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2006.
Taylor, who did not play in Virginia Tech’s season-opening victory over East Carolina, led the Hokies on their lone scoring drive in Baton Rouge. He had 44 rushing yards, including a 1-yard touchdown, and was 7-of-18 for 62 yards passing.
