Even though every person I’ve spoken to about D.C. United’s exhibition match against Portsmouth FC has responded with some version of, “How can they afford the plane tickets?”, the match is indeed going forward as originally announced by the financially strapped and recently relegated Premiership club, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. on July 24.
United also has finalized a charity match against the El Salvadoran national team on July 19. Proceeds from the game will benefit the Spanish Catholic Center and the club’s charitable arm, United for D.C. The big question: who will Christian Castillo play for? (And given he’s now been hanging around RFK Stadium for the last week, who will Manuel Salazar play for, too?)
And since Washington Freedom goalkeeper Erin McLeod was the last to deal with a club vs. country dilemma, we move on to Women’s Pro Soccer releasing a revised schedule in the wake of St. Louis Athletica closing up shop. The Freedom turn out to have some pretty significant changes, given they lost three matches they were to play against Athletica.
Here’s the specifics, to the best that I can surmise:
Jun. 20 at St. Louis – CANCELLED
July 4 OLD vs. Sky Blue, REVISED vs. Chicago
July 7 OLD at Chicago, REVISED at Sky Blue
July 10 vs. St. Louis – CANCELLED
July 11 REVISED at FC Gold Pride
July 28 REVISED at Atlanta
July 31 at Atlanta – CANCELLED
Aug. 19 REVISED vs. Chicago
Aug. 22 at St. Louis – CANCELLED
Also due to the St. Louis situation, the Freedom nabbed leftover goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris. To make room on the roster, they waived goalkeeper Mary Casey, and Australian forward Lisa De Vanna has been placed on injured reserve after she suffered a broken leg playing for the Australian national team in the 2010 Asian Cup on May 23, 2010 in a game against China.
