During the Congressional Baseball Game at Nationals Park, eight people jumped out on the field in a demonstration against fossil fuels.
Almost immediately, they were tackled by U.S. Capitol Police and security.
The protesters wore shirts that read “END FOSSIL FUELS.” No players were hurt in the storming of the field.
The demonstration came after the climate change group Climate Defiance, a youth-led activist organization, warned that they planned to stage a protest at the north gate of Nationals Park with the goal of shutting down the game.
After the storming of the field, Climate Defiance celebrated and claimed responsibility, writing on X, “BREAKING: We have taken the field at the Congressional Baseball Game + play has FROZEN! Congress sends billions of public $$ to subsidize deadly fossil fuels — but the police are tackling us instead. This Chevron-sponsored game cannot continue. This is unconscionable.”
Police removed the eight disrupters from the game and the game resumed. However, authorities stood around the perimeter of the field to ensure the safety of the players.
