While Jim Zorn may have eluded the proverbial crosshairs of frustrated Washington fans, for now, another professional coach inside the Beltway has found himself a target: D.C. United’s Tom Soehn.
With a season-high crowd of 24,175 inside RFK Stadium on Saturday, the United faithful chanted “Fire Soehn!” as D.C. suffered a 2-0 loss to Chivas USA, its third consecutive home defeat, one that more than likely will mean two straight seasons without a playoff berth for a team that had Major League Soccer’s best record in 2007.
“It sucks to hear that,” said United midfielder Santino Quaranta. “We’re the guys out there playing, not him.”
“You don’t hear anything,” maintained Soehn. “I’m looking to win a game, that’s what I’m looking to do.”
The United front office promised they wouldn’t let it happen again after Soehn failed to lead D.C. to the playoffs last season. With only two regular-season games left in 2009, wins alone might not be enough.
