The schedule for tonight’s Northern Region tournament boys and girls lacrosse championship and consolation games has been changed.
By agreement of the activities directors at the six involved schools the two consolation games, which determine the third participant in next week’s Group AAA state tournament, are now at Oakton whilethe championships are both at W.T. Woodson. Here is a preview.
Northern Region tournament finals at W.T. Woodson
Girls
Oakton (14-2) vs. Robinson (14-2), 5 p.m.
Is this the year that Oakton breaks through with a Northern Region tournament title? The Cougars have lost two straight times in the championship game. It is the Rams’ first trip to the region final since 2003 when they won the title.
Boys
Robinson (12-5) vs. W.T. Woodson (12-3), 7 p.m.
Top-ranked Woodson has won seven straight games and beat No. 2 Robinson, 6-4, on March 24 in the first game of the year for both teams. Senior attack Aaron Lawrence scored three goals for Robinson in its semifinal win over No. 3 Langley on Monday.
Northern Region consolations at Oakton
Girls
Loudoun Valley (18-2) vs. Yorktown (16-3), 5 p.m.
Both teams have been taken lightly the entire tournament and both have shocked more renowned programs. Juniors Reid Cifrino, Melissa Bennett and Sophia Webster lead the Patriots. Loudoun Valley played a Group AA schedule most of the year.
Boys
Langley (13-4) vs. Oakton (10-6), 7 p.m.
A rematch of last year’s Northern Region championship game won by the Cougars, 11-6. But Oakton, after scoring just twice in a region semifinal loss to Woodson, must regroup offensively against Langley’s first-team all-region goalie Chris Gascoigne. Of course, the Cougars have a first-team all-region goalie of their own in C.J. Ward.
