Tiger Woods was voted the Athlete of the Decade by the AP in a landslide. But there’s more to the story. Spots two through six (i.e. athletes who got more than one vote) went like this: Lance Armstrong, Roger Federer, Michael Phelps, Tom Brady and Usain Bolt.
Team sports be damned. Five out of the top six vote getters are from individual athletics. Everyone loves these sports even if we only watch them on TV every so often — well, except for golf.
But Tiger is the shining star here, reeling in 56 of 142 ballots cast by U.S. editors compared to Armstrong’s 33 and Federer’s 25.
Why did Tiger dominate so much? Because, simply, he is the best. Regardless of what you think of him as a man following the last few weeks, he’s still working on becoming the greatest golfer of all-time.
During the last decade, he won 12 majors and 64 events overall.
We can’t wait to see him back on the links once he gets his personal life in order.
