There is no doubt the kid has talent.
Now Casper Wells, the Detroit Tigers? 14th round selection in the 2005 draft, is trying to put it all together in his first full season after departing Towson University.
A pitcher and designated hitter during his three seasons at Scheurholz Park, Wells has been converted to a full-time right fielder in the Tigers farm system.
“I know I can still pitch. I see some of the guys in the league, and I think I could definitely be pitching, too,” said Wells, named 2005 CAA Player of the Year after batting .362 with 18 home runs at Towson. “It is tough leaving that behind.”
Wells, 22, began the 2006 season with the Single-A Lakeland Tigers, batting .182 with just eleven at bats in five games. Since then, he has been reassigned to the Tigers? short season New York Penn League affiliate in Oneonta, N.Y., roughly 70 miles from Wells? hometown of Schenectady.
While in Oneonta, Wells and his teammates live in dorms at Hartwick College.
“Its great to be so close to home, especially when we go play Tri City because that?s even closer,” Wells said of the proximity of the league?s hubs to his hometown.
In limited playing time, Wells is batting .229 with one home run and eight runs batted in through 12 games.
Wells and his Oneonta Tigers are slated to return to the Baltimore area to face the Orioles? New York-Penn League affiliate Aberdeen IronBirds August 4-6.
