On the heels of its worstseason in 18 years, Largo has hired veteran Delbert Hughes to revive its football fortunes. Hughes, formerly the head coach at Archbishop Spalding, was defensive coordinator last fall at Old Mill, which went 10-3 and won the 4A East Region title before losing to Damascus in the 4A state semifinals.
“He interviewed well and we like his experience,” said athletic director Lewis Howard. “He’s certified and he’ll teach P.E. We’re confident that he’ll put the football program back on track.”
Largo went 3-7 last season under Raymon Crawford and interim coach Darryl Hamilton. Crawford, who went 7-3 the previous season, was released in mid-season last fall after he conducted practice with an ineligible player. It was only the third losing season for the Lions since 1987. Largo went to the playoffs three times in a span of five years in the early 1990s.
