Franklin steps down at Paul VI

Paul VI boys basketball coach Levi Franklin has resigned in order to pursue college coaching opportunities.

Franklin, 40, took over at Paul VI in 2001, building a contender in the ultra-competitive Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. In seven years under Franklin, the Panthers were 120-62, tied for first-place in the league in 2003 and reached the Virginia Independent Schools state final three times. Paul VI finished 17-13 last season and lost to DeMatha in the WCAC semifinals.

Franklin, who says he hasn’t yet lined up any official interviews for collegiate openings, began his coaching career at Crossland in 1992. His career record is 281-120.

“It’s a hard decision to leave Paul VI because I’m so proud of what we accomplished here,” said Franklin, a 1986 Crossland graduate who played college basketball at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. “I still have to find a situation that fits because at the college level it’s more about wins and losses. But I just turned 40 last month and if I was ever going to do something like this the time had to be now.”
