Religion, politics meet on Sunday

President Bushs critics on the left have long said he worships at the altar of big business. We never thought they meant it literally.

St. John’s Church, which sits right across Lafayette Park from the White House and is the president’s usual place of worship on Sunday, is undergoing renovations. So for the next six months, the church has relocated its Sunday services half a block away at 1615 H St., which just so happens to be the headquarters of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

“There was no way of confirming whether or not the U.S. dollar is worshipped on the other six days of the week there, but on this day an altar was set up with a simple cross on the stage of what appears to be an auditorium,” wrote Sunday press pool reporter George Condon of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Nevertheless, one of the prayers was still given “for George, our president.”

Chamber spokesman J.P. Fielder noted, “We hear that Senator Obama is looking for a church, and he’s welcome to stop by the chamber on Sunday as well.”
