Barry Bonds will likely set the all time homerun record this week against the Washington Nationals and it will be interesting to find out who will be the voice of record on the call.
In sports the broadcaster who makes the call of the recordbreaking event often becomes almost as famous as the person who actually sets the record.
On TV Fox Sports Bay Area will have Duane Kuiper calling the play by play so he will have the official call on television. Kuiper has done a masterful job calling so many of Bonds greatest moments in baseball. He always seems to capture the mood of the crowd and the fans while setting things in a historical sense.
KNBR will have Jon Miller one of baseball’s greatest wordsmith’s calling the games this week. Miller has become the best baseball broadcaster on a national stage with Joe Morgan. They have set the standard for baseball broadcasting.
Miller however is proud to be the voice of the Giants and loves the medium of radio where he does his best work.
His broadcast partner is David Flemming and while he is young he is a gifted broadcaster and did a fine job calling the Bonds 755 Saturday night against the Padres. If the Bonds record breaking homer comes while he is at the mic then he will be equal to the task.
One thing is for certain and that is Erwin Higueros, the Giants’ Spanish-language announcer will have the signature call is Spanish on KLOK.
The
The MASN TV team of Bob Carpenter and Don Sutton are a couple of old pro’s when it comes to history. Carpenter called all the major homeruns for Mark McGwire as a member of the Cardinals broadcast team in ’98. He called numbers 60, 61 and 62, breaking Roger Marris record which at the time was THE biggest home run call of this generation, until NOW. He also called Mac’s 70th and also called Ken Griffey, Jr’s 500th in
WTWP Nationals radio voice Charlie Slowes also has been there for big calls in his career. He called the 400th home runs for Fred McGriff, Jose Canseco and Cal Ripken, just missed Wade Boggs 3,000 hit (wasn’t his inning) but called 2998 and 2999 in same game.
So when Bonds hits the record breaking homerun you can bet that there will be plenty of signature calls for Major League Baseball to choose from for their archives.
