Here’s the deal: Holdout is pointless

Of course Maurice Jones-Drew is open to being traded. It’s a nice distraction and one that has very little to do with the Jacksonville Jaguars running back’s holdout over a new contract, which started in the spring and has lingered far too long.

Getting dumped would offer Jones-Drew the chance to negotiate anew with someone other than Shahid Khan. The Jaguars owner has far bigger worries about his team and local market, which will lose one home game a season to London for four years starting in 2013.

A new helmet and city for Jones-Drew also wouldn’t change the fact that his starting point in negotiations still would consist of exactly zero leverage. He has two years left on his front-loaded contract, he’s 27 and he plays a position at which his value decreases with every NFL down he plays.

There are plenty of teams who could find a place for last season’s league-leading rusher. But Jones-Drew clearly hasn’t read the holdout playbook. Even if he ultimately winds up out of Jacksonville, it always ends with the player caving in.
