Still a mom
It doesn’t matter if you’re a U.S. senator. It doesn’t matter if you’re a former first lady. It doesn’t matter if you just pulled off one of the more remarkable comeback stories in recent memory. In the end, you’re still a mom, first and foremost.

Following Sen. Hillary Clinton’s impressive victory Tuesday night in New Hampshire, Yeas & Nays spotted her leaving Southern New Hampshire University at 1 a.m., after her victory speech and subsequent schmoozing. When Clinton got in her limo alongside her daughter, Chelsea, and former President Bill Clinton, she instantly plopped a cat kennel on her lap as the car sped away — not exactly the kind of parting gift you’d expect a Comeback Gal to adore.

Turns out there wasn’t a cat in the kennel, but Chelsea’s dog, Soren (named for Danish existentialist Søren Kierkegaard), a Yorkie puppy. A source who’s met Soren (and agrees with the dog’s philosophies) tells Yeas & Nays that Soren was a Christmas gift to Chelsea from her boyfriend, Marc Mezvinsky. Chelsea and Soren have been making the rounds in Iowa and New Hampshire and have visited several field offices.
Soren’s small enough that a cat kennel is perfectly sufficient, and Clinton plopped the carrier on her lap to make room for everyone else in the car.
Perhaps after the voters of New Hampshire were so good to her, she was in an especially thoughtful mood.
