Redskins Week 3 preview: at Rams

Sunday, 4:05 p.m.; TV » FOX; Radio » 92.7 & 94.3 FM/730 & 980 AM • Sirius 152

Three keys to victory

1. Confuse Bradford » It’s guaranteed that Washington will try to do this, especially with an aggressive coordinator (Jim Haslett) facing a rookie quarterback (Sam Bradford). Haslett will throw multiple looks at him, particularly showing a lot of blitzes and forcing Bradford to make quick decisions. Look for the Rams to throw a lot of quick passes — they like to throw to the defense’s right side. Bradford is talented; he’s only played two games. Force some mistakes.

2. Beware of the blitz » Rams defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is as aggressive as Haslett. Spagnuolo will send blitzes from all over. Considering Trent Williams’ health, it would be smart to test his lateral movement (if he plays). Washington has done well in protection, partly because of running back Clinton Portis but also because of quarterback Donovan McNabb’s poise and mobility. They’ll need both Sunday. But with eight-man fronts and heavy blitzing, the Rams are susceptible to big plays.

3. Contain Steven Jackson » The Rams running back is fantastic and can control the games, keeping St. Louis close. With a rookie quarterback, having a strong run game is imperative – just ask Mark Sanchez last season. Jackson, who has size and speed, has run for 183 yards combined the past two years vs. Washington. The Rams are 1-1 in those games. Nose tackle Maake Kemoeatu and right end Kedric Golston must be more sound vs. the run.

Key matchups

Brian Orakpo • Redskins • LB » He explodes his hips into blockers very well; the Redskins move him around.

vs.
Roger Saffold • Rams • LT »
The rookie is athletic and moves well laterally. But he’s not that strong and will be tested.

DeAngelo Hall • Redskins • CB » The Rams throw 90 percent of the time to their left; Hall plays the right. He could be bored.

vs.
Mark Clayton •
Rams • WR » He leads the Rams with 12 catches, but is averaging just 11.9 yards per grab. He’s still solid.

Clinton Portis • Redskins • RB » He hasn’t had a lot of holes and facing a speedy linebacker won’t help on cutbacks.

vs.
James Laurinaitis •
Rams • MLB » He’s a solid playmaker. His athleticism will be tested vs. Washington’s play-action passes.

State of the teams

RAMS » St. Louis had a chance to win its first two games, but lost both close games. The Rams now have lost 17 of 18 games under coach Spagnuolo. They’re also banged up entering this game. Can’t imagine the confidence is too high.

REDSKINS » Washington knows it easily could be 2-0 and seeing the offense explode last week was cause for optimism. But the defensive breakdowns are equal causes for concern. Having strong veteran leaders helps after a grueling overtime defeat.

Examiner predicts

The Redskins won’t overlook the Rams; teams that often miss the playoffs can’t overlook anyone. Washington’s defense will cause problems and the offense posts another impressive showing.
