The Redskins wanted him to take as much time as possible. They’re also glad he’s returned.
Offensive line coach Joe Bugel returned to practice after missing the past week to be in Phoenix with his daughter Holly, who has a rare form of bone cancer. She’s been dealing with this since last year, though Bugel kept it quiet until late in the season. Bugel returned Sunday.
“He’s back, trying to concentrate on work, but knowing that he’s got part of his heart still with his family,” Redskins coach Jim Zorn said.
Tight ends coach Rennie Simmons coached the offensive line in his absence.
“Rennie did a great job, but you don’t replace Joe Bugel,” Redskins right tackle Jon Jansen said. “It’s hard to see someone struggle through something like that. Now that we have kids of our own, and daughters specifically, no one should go through that. Anything we can do, we want to make ourselves available to Joe.”
Skins notes
» Receiver Malcolm Kelly ran routes on a side field during practice, fueling hope that he’ll return for Saturday’s game vs. Carolina. Kelly underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Aug. 4, but did not do much running until Sunday. He increased his running Monday, though said he only went about half- to three-quarter speed.
“He needs to get into a rhythm and building that confidence up and cutting at high speed,” Redskins coach Jim Zorn said.
» The Redskins cut linebacker Rian Wallace and gave him an injury settlement. Wallace dislocated his shoulder in Saturday’s preseason win over the Jets. Wallace had a legitimate shot at making the roster. Washington signed former Maryland linebacker David Holloway.
