Georgetown Prep pursues history

In his 19 years as lacrosse coach at Georgetown Prep, Kevin Giblin has had a singular obsession — to beat arch-rival Landon. Giblin’s focus has been such that other lacrosse goals took a back seat.

When asked last week about his team going undefeated, Giblin said he had not considered the possibility.

“That’s funny, until you mentioned it, I haven’t even thought about it. Nobody’s brought it up,” said Giblin. “Yeah, that would be nice.”

Giblin has never had a perfect season. Prep went 13-1 in 1993, 19-1 in 1999, and 22-1 in 2003. At 16-0, the Little Hoyas have a chance to make school history, but it won’t be easy with four tough games left on the schedule followed by the Interstate Athletic Conference tournament. Landon (8-5) will be anxious for another shot after its 10-5 regular-season loss, its worst ever to Prep.

This season, however, Prep may be in a class by itself. The Little Hoyas have out-scored their opponents, 222-53, with only two close calls — an 8-7 win over Gilman (Balt.) and 10-8 over Loyola (Balt.), then ranked No. 1 in the state by the Maryland High School Lacrosse Coaches Association. Giblin has had more star-studded teams, but he says this is his deepest.

“We’ve been deep at certain spots in the past. But we’ve never had this much depth at all positions,” said Giblin. “It’s made a huge difference in the second half.”

Two weeks ago against St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) Prep led 2-0 at the half, before pulling away for an 11-2 victory.
