Skins notes: Rinehart or Montgomery?

» The Redskins still haven’t made up their minds about who will start at right guard against Detroit Sunday — and for the foreseeable future. But coach Jim Zorn said he’ll likely announce Friday whether it will be Chad Rinehart or Will Montgomery.

They split time with the first unit for the second straight day.

“There’s not a whole lot of difference,” Redskins offensive line coach Joe Bugel said. “Both are tough guys. Both are smart players. You can flip a coin and not go wrong.”

Zorn said whoever starts will play the whole game. Bugel said they both might play.

Montgomery has started six NFL games, including one at right guard in 2006. Rinehart has been inactive for 15 of his 18 pro games, partly because he only plays one position (guard). Backups who remain active often play two spots.

Rinehart was a third-round pick in 2008, drafted with the thought that he’d someday replace Thomas. The coaches say a power-lifting regimen in the offseason helped Rinehart.

“Each guy comes along at his own pace,” Zorn said. “Really, the going rate for a linemen to get it is his third year. We would love to have a guy in his first year get it. Everyone has their own timing.”

» Bugel on former Redskins tackle Jon Jansen, now with Detroit: “I probably won’t see him. I have a high regard for Jon Jansen. He was a good Redskin while he was here. I have never had a problem with him. He was a great guy to coach. I’ll give [center Casey] Rabach a message to tell Jon how I feel about him.”
