Redskins coach Mike Shanahan again tried to stymie the rumors defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth is on the trading block.
“There has been no mention of trading Haynesworth or any other players,” Shanahan said Sunday after the third and final minicamp practice. “The only person I’ve allowed to talk to other teams is Jason Campbell. I want to get a feel for what we have. I’m not looking to trade anybody.”
Campbell and linebacker Rocky McIntosh joined Haynesworth in missing the voluntary minicamp (the only mandatory one is June 16-18). McIntosh, a restricted free agent, is hoping for a better contract. McIntosh, like many restricted free agents, would have been unrestricted under the old collective bargaining agreement.
“I understand Rocky’s situation,” Shanahan said. “I have a lot of respect for Rocky. Hopefully he’ll be in here quickly.”
Big man moving around
Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett said Haynesworth won’t be restricted to playing nose tackle in the 3-4. He said he likely would play all three spots. It’s doubtful they would want to play him at nose that often.
“He’d be special in this defense,” Haslett said.
Landry closer to the line
LaRon Landry will play more in the box this season. There’s no differentiation between free and strong safety in Haslett’s scheme, but there will be many times the coverage requires Landry to be closer to the line of scrimmage — unlike the past two and a half years.
“My game is more of an aggressive style, and being a free safety, you have to sit back and let things come to you,” he said. “In this defense, I’m down in more action. … It’ll be a fun year.”
Landry said he’s working out in town this year as opposed to the past two because of the new defense.
More rushing for Orakpo
Haslett said second-year linebacker Brian Orakpo rushed the quarterback 250 times out of 1,000 snaps last season. This year, Haslett said, they want to rush him 700 times.
