The University of Maryland field hockey team, the reigning NCAA champion, is ranked No. 1 after the first regular-season National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll.
The Terps (4-0) will host American, Northwestern and Temple this weekend in the annual Terrapin Invitational. They began the week with a 1-0 victory over Old Dominion in their 2006 home opener.

Both Maryland and Old Dominion came into the game at 3-0, and the No. 3-ranked Monarchs were looking to pull off the upset and get revenge for a loss to the Terps in the NCAA Tournament semifinals last season.
“ODU is well-coached and it is always a good test and a marker of where we are in our development,” Terps coach Missy Meharg said in a release Monday.
The deciding goal came in the second half with just more than eight minutes to play. Sophomore Kim Ziegler scored her second goal of the year off a Nicole Maraca assist and gave the Terps the win.
Towson
Towson is 2-1 after beating Appalachian State, 5-2, Sunday. The Tigers scored four first-half goals. They dropped their opener to Richmond. Towson will play its first home game against Bucknell at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Unitas Stadium.
Towson junior Kajee Murangi was named the winner of the Colonial Athletic Association field hockey player of the week award for the week ending Sept. 3. In wins over Longwood and Appalachian State last weekend, she scored four goals.
UMBC
The Retrievers (0-2) remain in search of their first win in 2006, as well as the team?s first goal. UMBC lost, 5-0, at St. Joseph?s Saturday. The Retrievers dropped their opener to West Chester, 4-0.
