Sarah-Jo Lawrence is not bitter about her selection to the All-Atlantic 10 second team.
The George Washington junior guard was a preseason first-team pick, and certainly lived up to expectations with a career-high 13.4 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.
Was it too much to ask for three Colonials — guard Kimberly Beck, another preseason first-teamer, was a lock, and forward Jessica Adair also got the nod — to receive first-team honors?
“Jessica had such a breakout year that you couldn’t not give her first team,” Lawrence said. “She was at one point almost averaging a double-double, and she makes a tremendous impact on this team so I would definitely give up — I think that she kind of took my first team spot. But I’d rather that happen because she had a great season.”
Meanwhile, Lawrence (Rhoadesville, Va./Orange County High) remains one of the league’s most dangerous offensive weapons. She’s also another one of head coach Joe McKeown’s underrateddiamonds in the rough who have been key to the Colonials’ 18-game winning streak and best regular season in school history (25-2).
“Because she’s from a small town, not a lot of people saw her as some other players than had been recruited,” said McKeown. “I think people wish they had.”
