Maryland hits nine threes in blowout win over GW
The Terrapins made nine three-pointers to power to a 76-53 win against George Washington in the 14th Annual BB&T Classic at Verizon Center on Sunday night.
Maryland went 9-for-19 from long range and used a balanced offense in which four players scored in double figures to improve to 6-2 in front of a crowd of 10,149.
Junior forward Landon Milbourne scored a career-high 20 points and junior guard Greivis Vasquez scored 17 points with 11 rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Adrian Bowie finished with 17 points and junior Eric Hayes added 13 as the Terrapins earned their first victory in the local showcase event since defeating George Mason, 78-54, in 2004.
The Colonials (3-2) were led by Tony Taylor and Rob Diggs, who each scored 10 points.
Maryland used its best first half of the season to build a 45-26 halftime advantage, which enabled it to cruise to victory.
The Terrapins used 11-0 and 10-0 runs in the first 11 minutes of play to build a 30-14 advantage with eight minutes, 33 seconds remaining. Bowie led all scorers with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting in the first half. The Terrapins hit four of their first five shots from beyond the arc, highlighted by Hayes making three in a span of 38 seconds.
The Terrapins biggest lead was 71-42 with 4:14 remaining in the second half.
Maryland was outrebounded, 16-3, to open play, but adjusted to finish with a 44-39 edge on the boards.
Sophomore forward Dino Gregory had nine rebounds and one block off the bench, and Milbourne added eight rebounds.
After improving to 2-2 in neutral sights, the Terrapins return to Comcast Center — where they are 4-0 this season — for six straight non-conference games. Maryland hosts Delaware State on Friday night at 8 before getting a 10-day break for exams.
