Redskins trade for OT Jammal Brown

The Redskins traded for two-time Pro Bowl tackle Jammal Brown, bolstering an area that had been a major weakness at the end of last season and remained a question mark after the spring. The Redskins will give up a conditional draft pick to New Orleans in exchange for Brown.

“We are pleased to add another proven NFL competitor to our team,” Redskins Executive Vice President/General Manager Bruce Allen said.

The Redskins could end up surrendering two draft picks for Hicks. They will give up either a third- or fourth-round pick in 2011 for Hicks. Also, if he plays 90 percent of the snaps this season, or makes the Pro Bowl, the Redskins will ship a 2012 sixth-rounder to New Orleans.

Also, if the Redskins give a third-rounder to the Saints this year, they will receive a fifth-rounder in return. If it’s a fourth-round pick, then Washington would get back a sixth- or seventh-round selection.

Brown, who missed all of last season with a hip injury, passed a physical Saturday afternoon. Initial reports say that Brown will play right tackle, a position he played as a rookie with New Orleans in 2005. He’s an athletic lineman who should work well in Mike Shanahan’s blocking system, which relies on lots of lateral movement. If Brown plays the right side, then Artis Hicks could move from right tackle to right guard, leaving Mike Williams as the odd man out. But it does add needed depth. Hicks has started at guard.

Brown would pair with rookie left tackle Trent Williams, the fifth overall pick in the draft in April. He looked sharp during spring practices, though the real test comes in training camp when there’s full contact.
